Rich with Depth and Accessible and Easy to Digest!!

God the Trinity: Biblical Portraits by Malcolm B. Yarnell III is one of the most important works on the Trinity in recent decades. The book is divided into eight chapters. Each chapter paints a portrait of God through the exegesis and examination of eight specific Trinitarian passages: (1) Matthew 28:19, (2) 2 Corinthians 13:14, (3) Deuteronomy 6:4-7a, (4) John 1:18, (5) John 16:14-15, (6) John 17:21-22, (7) Ephesians 1:9-10, and (8) Revelation 5:6. Furthermore, each of these chapters more narrowly converge on a single word from the passage that Yarnell uses to unearth and construct a clear biblical portrait of the trinity. These eight chapters are sandwiched between a prologue—which presents the necessity of the study—and an epilogue—which provides a succinct portrait of the triune God framed by ten Trinitarian theses in three categories: (1) Trinitarian Reality, (2) Trinitarian Hermeneutics, and (3) Trinitarian Economy.

There is much to be praised in this volume. First, and probably foremost, Yarnell is a first-rate scholar, and God the Trinity echoes serious and seasoned reflection on the subject matter. Second, there is a lot of excellent information in this book that will expand the reader’s understanding and knowledge of the biblical portrait of the trinity. Still, the exegesis of the biblical passages therein is where the real benefit of this volume surfaces. Yarnell is clear, articulate, and judicious in his presentation, and the reader will benefit with every turn of the page. This is a volume that is both rich with depth and accessible and easy to digest. Third, the organization around the “portrait” concept of the Trinity does well to display the biblical revelation concerning the triune God. The only true critique, and this is more of a desire than a critique is the lack of interaction within the Old Testament portrait of the Trinity. Yarnell spends nearly all of his time in the New Testament, and most of that time in the Gospel of John. It would have been good to see more canonical representation, but the limitations of such are understandable.

God the Trinity: Biblical Portraits by Malcolm B. Yarnell III is a timely and welcomed defense and articulation of the biblical doctrine of the Trinity. From the approach to the delivery, Yarnell has provided a volume distilled in seasoned scholarly reflection and research. The depths of this volume are deep, and the insights are accessible. Malcolm Yarnell has easily delivered one of the most important works on the Trinity in recent decades. It comes highly recommended!

A Fresh Look at The Scriptures' Trinity

When it comes to discussion of the Trinity, Christianity surprisingly runs quite a gamut of opinions and thoughts. While the Trinity is one of the most creedal and thus essential doctrines of Evangelicalism, some accuse the Trinity of being explicitly unknowable according to Scripture. Some, though they recognize the Trinity in Scripture, do not put much significance on the matter. Even within the camp of Evangelicalism, we’ve seen lots of recent debate surrounding the roles and functions among the person of the Trinity, with the tiniest of nuances laboriously discussed. Malcolm Yarnell III has set out to answer these two key attacks on the importance of the biblical Trinity and provide a fresh look at Scripture’s thoughts on who the Trinity specifically is with an important book, God The Trinity: Biblical Portraits.

As Yarnell puts it, he spends a majority of his time “evaluating the Biblical source material for the Trinity” (vii), playing off of the metaphor of art. As he alludes to in the book, the task of evaluating every single Trinitarian text in Scripture would be “a gargantuan task” (25), with over 120 texts! However, Yarnell does a masterful job of reducing this heavy undertaking to a few subheadings. He desires to see a recovery of “large, comprehensive structures of meaning” (11).

One of Yarnell’s most important chapters is the opening one, in which he sets the stage for his arguments with “The Identity of God.” He asserts that it is the very name of God that sets forth a biblical concept of the Trinity. “There are three different names provided–Father, Son, Holy Spirit–but “name” is either mistakenly or intentionally used in the singular. If intentional, it appears to indicate a singular identity for the three” (20). Yarnell then moves towards a more robust and narrow treatment of biblical Trinitarian texts, engaging with Greek words like “καί” and Hebrew words like “שְׁמַע.” Yarnell’s goal throughout the book is simple: to show that “the Father is the source from which the Son is begotten and the Holy Spirit proceeds” (109).

Recently we have seen quite a bit of controversy surrounding discussion on the Trinity, especially on the note of eternal functional subordination. Yarnell is an important voice in this matter. While some have accused Baptist theologians of poor exegesis in this matter, Yarnell makes compelling points to defend his views, offering in God the Trinity one of the premier books on the Trinity any Baptist theologian has put out. I am grateful for this volume and know I will return to it as a resource for an exegetical and biblically-based approach to the Trinity.

Some thoughts on "God the Trinity: Biblical Portraits"

One of the great 'mysteries of the faith' for Christians involves the Trinity. The concept of a triune God is difficult for most people, including pastors, to understand. For years people have used apples, eggs, and even balloons to try to teach about how the 3 persons of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and are actually one. Sometimes it seems to work , and other times the student is left just as confused as he or she was before the lesson. Even the simple explanations of "3-in-purpose--one in essence" or "Creator-Redeemer-Sanctifier" tend to is less than helpful in helping people truly understand.
Because of the lack of understanding, many pastors tend to gloss over the 3rd person in the Trinity: Holy Spirit. We pray "Our Father who art in Heaven". We celebrate Jesus' birth, life, death, and especially the Resurrection, but Holy Spirit tends to be forgotten, except on Pentecost Sunday, or in Pentecostal churches. In fact in his Prologue, the author comments on a survey "which gives credence to [a] controversial claim that " most Baptists are Unitarians who simply have not gotten around to denying the Trinity."
Against this background of misunderstanding and confusion when it comes to an understanding of the Trinity, Malcolm Yarnell III, professor of systematic theology, among other titles, has written God the Trinity: Biblical Portraits (B&H Academic, 2016). He has two stated questions that he hopes to answer in this book: Is the Doctrine that God is Trinity a biblical doctrine? And is it a doctrine that is necessary to believe?
Although the writing style is overly academic for a casual read, the subject matter almost demands such an approach. At times though, it seemed to me that Yarnell was even more wordy than the academic approach calls for. A few rabbit trails could have been left out. Especially helpful were footnotes instead of endnotes especially when the note did more than cite someone else's work.
Yarnell addresses 8 different scriptures that describe the Trinitarian nature of God, how the 3 persons work together, and ends with a portrait of the God who will come. In each of his portraits, he is able to make a strong case for his thesis that the Trinity is Biblical doctrine, and that it is necessary to grasp that doctrine in order to fully experience, appreciate, and understand the Gospel Story.
The epilogue is also especially helpful: after a careful exegesis of each text, the author has drawn several "general theological conclusions" concerning the trinity. I mention this because all too often the tendency is to skip over things like introductions, prologues and epilogues. Sometimes that works, in this case, the reader would truly be missing an important piece of the overall work. Since Yarnell use portraits, painting, art as metaphor, let me putting it this way. Skipping over the prologue and the epilogue would be like looking at a painting and not seeing any yellow or red.
If you're looking for some light reading, this is not the book for you. If you are truly interested in learning more about the Trinitarian God, this book is a must read. 5/5

I can't believe no one has already added a review of
this well-known and frequently referenced book. Perhaps
none was necessary as it is so widely known. The "Master
book" is often cited by other authors - Gardiner,
Berlekamp-Conway-Guy, etc. This book belongs in any
serious recreational mathematician's reference library
along with "Mathematical Recreations and Essays", "Winning
Ways", "Amusements in Mathematics". It is published by
Dover and is a high quality republication of a classic
at a very low price. Top value for money.

The Real Master!

Yes, this is the real master book! I bought this book in 1974 and I knew this is the last book on math recreations I would ever have to buy. I am still right after 37 years ... though there are so many similar books published since, every time when I come across a math puzzle, there is always a discourse in this book ... in depth and with many known variations. However, for any recreation game described here, you need to read it thoroughly through, the benefit is that, once and for all, you wouldn't be interested in tackling it anymore (which in turn saves a lot of your time in the future when re-encountered)!

The perfect item to help your child to read about Lego Friends.

If your girl loves everything related to Lego Friends like mine is, you can be certain that this book would be a nice surprise to her.

The first 31 pages of the book will present all the characters that can be found in the Lego Friends products. Then, the book will present you ALL the animals also found in the boxes of Lego Friends. Following behind the animals, you will learn about all the different hobbies that the characters enjoy doing. Living in Heartlake City, the characters have numerous places to go from houses to school without forgetting the places they work or enjoy spending time. All these locations are also part of the book. Finally and not the least, you can discover all the vehicles that the characters use to go to various places in the city.

I am very impressed with the design of the Lego Friends and the detailed that was put into each scene available for purchase. To be honest, I would like to be a girl again and have these cool playthings. But I am a mom and I enjoy seeing my girl playing with her Lego friends and with the other Lego products that we have (including the ones I used to play with when I was her age!). The book will provide fun reading material for the girl in your life who enjoys her Lego friends.

Lego fan must have

My 6 year old got this for her birthday a few months ago and loves this book. She carries it with her everywhere. She even got sick in the car and because it was with her she ruined it. We had to order it a second time and it is still carried around. My daughter is a great reader so I can tell you about every stinkin' Lego friends character without looking it up because she is constantly reading it to me. If you have a Lego fan it's a must for your collection. Unless of course you don't want them knowing how many sets are available. I'm reminded daily that we haven't bought them all yet.

Good Book, Good Products

My 6 year old LOVED this book. It is exactly as descibed, a character encyclopedia of all the Lego and Friends characters. The book also talks about all the Lego and Friends sets. This one was a real hit at my daughters school with girls ages 4-10. It also includes an Emily lego friend doll that is not offered in any of the lego and friends sets which is a real perk as my daugher was able to enjoy it even more. As Lego and Friends collectors, we believe this book is a great buy for any little girl who enjoys legos.

Required reading

This was the required book for an intro class.
The book is so entirely self serving it was painful. I expect more from a college level reading.
I am not a business major, and noticed some statements to be false, inaccurate, or missing in details. Perhaps it is cleared up in a later class and this book is used for concept building more than anything. There is a web portion that can be used including tests and a video series that does a good job at making you hate specific characters as everyone takes a polar stance on the issues.

Grab this used and prepare for some easy A's!

This textbook was required for my Intro to Marketing course in college. It is very condensed for an adult reader, especially if one is not use to reading long chapters, e.g. 20 pages per chapter. The chapters are replete with details and subheadings. It contains lots of colorful advertisement samples, example scenarios, power points, questionnaire at the end of each chapter, index, glossary and a website for videos of each chapter.

Great Commentary on Rozsa's Ben-Hur Score

This book elicits on-the-money details regarding Rozsa's composition aesthetic. While it does reiterate information already documented in Rozsa's autobiography, A Double Life, it does supply additional information for those of us who are avid fans of his work. The only negative is that it doesn't contain any full orchestral excerpts. I long for the day when the full orchestral score will be made available for study.

As in her previous novels, which both won National Jewish Book Awards, Horn pays homage to American Jewish culture, history, family, and faith. Here, however, she forsakes her trademark “kaleidoscopic narrative techniques” (Washington Post) for more traditional storytelling—to good effect. Horn’s talent for research is undeniable, and the majority of critics agreed that she offers a rare glimpse of Jewish life during the Civil War. Reviewers praised the entertaining descriptions of 19th-century espionage, as well as the depiction of several real-life historical figures. One notable exception (Cleveland Plain Dealer) argued that the novel is too pedantic, and the Miami Herald criticized the protagonist. Overall, however, reviewers hailed All Other Nights as an impressive third undertaking and a strong historical thriller.

I love Dara Horn's books, but I found this one disappointing.

One of my favorite books is Dara Horn's first novel, In the Image. It's simply marvelous. Her next book, The World to Come, was also a winner although I didn't like it quite as much.

Having enjoyed those books I was really, REALLY looking forward to this one. And I am sorry to say that I was really disappointed with it and I was surprised that my reading experience was so different than so many other reviewers.

This is the story of a young Jewish man, Jacob Rappaport, who becomes a spy for the Union during the Civil War. He is chosen for this role because he has certain important family connections with people in high places in the Confederacy.

Jacob is sent on several morally ambiguous assignments, and he dutifully complies. He is eventually sent to stay with relatives who are suspected of being Confederate supporters and spies and his mission is to marry one of the young daughters. What he didn't count on was falling in love.

I did learn some interesting information in this book, especially about the roles and prevalence of Jews on both sides of the conflict during this war. I had no idea that the Confederate Secretary of State was a Jewish man named Judah Benjamin. What the author does well is show that despite allegiances to either side, Jews were still considered outsiders; often treated with derision and suspicion.

I also thought that the author did a good job of showing how good people can be put in complex and thorny situations where they have to make difficult moral choices - where no matter what they do, they do not come out with clean hands.

I did have some problems with this book, and one is that I thought that it bogged down in places. I was surprised to see this novel described as a page-turner because it sure wasn't that for me, although the author's previous books were. (This novel does differ from her previous books in that it is more traditional in format, and the story telling is straightforward and linear.)

I also had problems with the characters. I found Jacob to be too self-depreciating and full of low self-esteem and self-doubt, to the point that I had trouble understanding why one of the other important characters, Jeannie, fell in love with him. I started feeling about him the way he felt about himself, which wasn't good. I had trouble sympathizing (or empathizing) with him, and he never came alive as a character for me - he never seemed real, and he seemed to deal with his situations and moral dilemmas by either denigrating himself or hand-wringing.

I also had trouble understanding what motivated Jeannie, and why she made the choices that she made. Like Jacob, I could never get a handle on her.

Lastly, I thought that the author was rather heavy-handed and obvious in trying to get her points made, such as the fact that race doesn't matter, and that we are all the same under our skin:

"soldiers and slaves, and girls, black and white, little boys and old women, many of them drunk. all of them raving - were walking around dazed, their clothing and faces and hands and hair painted with a layer of gray soot. The effect was to erase the races, making the white people look like Negroes and the Negroes look like whites."

Although I am disappointed in this book I do highly recommend Dara Horn's first brilliant novel, In the Image. You can't go wrong with that one.

This is a bit, a bit repetitious

Honestly, there is not a lot to like about this novel. The plotline is extremely convoluted and the characters are just not likeable. The men are lustful idiots and the women are conniving tricksters. The biggest problem, for me, was the very poor execution of the writing. There is so much repetition. The author can't describe a southern woman without having to mention "the errant curls" in her face and the thousands of times she has to tuck them behind the ear. The prose literally becomes funny near the end of the novel. Jacob, the protagonist, wonders many, many times that "it is all just a dream" and "it was as if he were in a nightmare". The funniest repeating description is after Jacob loses his eye and the myriad of funny lines that follow: "He couldn't take his eye off Jeannie", "the eyes of every man in the room bulged, including Jacob's remaining eye", "he squinted his remaining eye","...she said, glaring at his remaining eye" and "a picture unfurled before his remaining eye as he connected the dots..." (these repetitions are laughably numerous).

And I have to mention this funny line when the author writes "The corridor was lined with books, but the study was positively vomiting them" (p. 257) Too funny and quite painful, in my opinion.

Beyond the extreme repetition, the Jewish approach to the Civil War is handled very poorly, in my opinion. This topic seems original and full of potential, but the writing is so bad and the treatment of Jews in the war so trite, that it's a complete literary mess. Jacob comes to no spiritual understanding of what he's done and thus there is no redemption at all for his past sins. Judaism doesn't even matter to him in the end. How poorly the Jewish aspect is handled can be seen in this one line alone when she writes "The three Christian men at the table looked at his wounded Hebrew body and saw salvation incarnate". (p. 254) Silly, superficial and meaningless.

"On some other night...everything would be different"

The 'Four Questions' text asks "Why is this night different from all other nights?" Jacob Rappaport is assured in "All Other Nights" that "What you allow to happen on one night will happen on all other nights as well." Which is it? Jacob's redemption hangs in the balance.

Ms. Horn has written a wonderfully researched, compelling piece of historical fiction. Who thinks about Jews in America during the Civil War, much less Jews as spies or Confederates? If you'd like to go to a place and time about which you've not given a moment's thought, check out this book. Beautifully written, it's an absorbing read and thought-provoking as well. Ms. Horn joins Anita Diamant as a top-notch chronicler of Jewish life as it may well have been.

About the Author

A passionate owner of dogs, who dedicated herself to researching and learning about them for over 45 years. For the past 35 years she concentrated on resolving aggression issues and finding the reasons for their behavioural problems. Only after having a great deal of success in the rehabilitation of red zone dogs and solving the many problems of pet owners has she devised and written this book. Her work continues in the training of younger people so that her training methods will become widespread and put a stop to dogs being a nuisance and becoming dangerous.

Not quite what I was expecting when I bought the book. Didn't really give any more information than I already knew and I had to read through the entire book to find out the "secret"...which wasn't really anything secret......

Inside the dog

Primal Plus is a nice step toward the thinking one needs to possess when living with a dog. If we are to be honest with helping a dog, we must first consider their perspective and stop thinking for them. I think Ms. Neal did well to get these ideas together. It's not easy.Perhaps with more editing the flow of information will become stronger. One thing did stand out: The information briefly mentioned regarding quality sleep and its affect on behavior. A nervous dog has poor sleep. They end up crashing. A dog owner might do well to read this book and consider the dog's perspective toward improving the relationship.
