From Publishers Weekly
First published in 1989 in an illustrated 480-page edition, Johnson's sweeping chronicle of the making, merchandising and drinking of wine has been considerably pared down but remains brimful of fascinating information. Beginning with what we know of oenology in ancient Egypt and Greece, the text travels up to the 21st century, citing, for example, countries that produced the "most exciting wines" of 2003. Along the way, famed wine writer Johnson revisits the ongoing debate of who is responsible for introducing vineyards into France, reveals that the coupling of bottle and cork in the 17th century allowed wine to age properly and recalls Thomas Jefferson declaring that wine was "the only antidote to the bane of whiskey." Sidebars throughout relate sprightly anecdotes, such as the story of Magellan stocking his ships for the 1519–1521 circumnavigation of the globe (he spent more on sherry than he did on armaments—and then got himself killed en route). Some 125 maps and illustrations in lush color and b&w depict everything from a 5,000-year-old panel that is the first known illustration of wine drinking to a striking photo of a hyper-modernistic winery in Spain. While necessarily less comprehensive than the initial edition, this version is a thorough survey of the elixir that, as Johnson says, owes its popularity to its power to banish care.

How about a little history with that glass of wine...
By Laura Crockett
I have just begun perusing this book. It's really not a tome one reads cover to cover. One goes back and forth. It's really a good reference work if one needs to know a little about the history of wine. Since I write historical fiction, it's a good book to have around. After all, the peoples of history drank lots of the liquid we call wine. It is a ceremonial as well as social drink.

Since one of the stories I tell as a storyteller is about Medea, it was very interesting to learn that the cultivation of wine came from her part of the world, Colchis, which is now Georgia. I think of Medea as a chemist, so I now wonder if this ancient myth's location had anything to do with the cultivation and fermenting of wine. Was it she who took this knowledge to the Mediterranean when she escaped with Jason to that location? We can only speculate. I keep reading this book with each glass of wine I take in the evenings.

Coffee Table Textbook on Wine
By Mark Herwick
This is a classic text on the history of wine, and it is out-of-print! Though required for a college class, it is well written by one of the few people who the subject good enough to get it right. The illustrated edition is worth the extra cost not only for the informational photographs, but also for the history of wine as told through artwork from around the world! Many classic paintings are reproduced in the volume, which makes this book at home on the coffee table not the library!

As good as a glass of wine
By dirce
Many people consider "useless culture" to have knowledge about certain issues. Many would claim: "Why do I have to know about wine?". The answer is very simple, indeed. Wine is part of the culture of a people and more than being a drink it is a form of art.

Considering the wine a form of useful knowledge and a form of art, "The sorty of wine" is a masterpiece on the subject. It is also written in such a way you may feel you are part of the trips Mr. Johnson did in order to come up with this brilliant work. A book for the lovers of this beverage that is more than something to drink, it is a pleasure for the soul.

A Winning New Character Propels This Action-Packed Plot!
By Joseph Souza, Author of Crime Thriller, NEED TO FIND YOU
Lexi Sabado, the heroine of Fiona Quinn's new thriller WEAKEST LYNX, is a lot more talented than she even knows. At twenty years old, her skill set is impressive enough to warrant attention from various law and intelligence agencies. But Lexie only cares to live a normal life, especially after a whirlwind two-week romance with Army Ranger Angel, who she marries just before he leaves on a special assignment.

Life for Lexie turns for the worse when a violent, sadistic stalker sets his sights on her. Leaving a series of clues in his wake, Lexie must use all her considerable skills to help capture this twisted villain. Helping keep her safe is Detective Dave, whose constant appearance seems like a red herring. Is he in love with her or is he the stalker? Soon enough she is moved to a safe house under the watchful eyes of the Adonis-like Stryker and his cracker jack team of special agents. Can Lexie and Stryker coexist, and capture the stalker, while their hormones are ranging?

Lexie possess rare psychic powers—knowings—that alerts her when things start to turn bad. Her childhood was anything but normal, and rather than being schooled, Lexie was 'unschooled' by various persons with an expertise in their respective fields. A group of ethnic Nanas taught her how to cook their best-known dishes. Master Wang skilled her in the martial arts. Spyder McGraw taught her intelligence tips. A prostitute neighbor schooled her in the fine art of pleasing men. A nurse tending Lexie's dying mother taught her Reiki Therapy and healing arts. In short, Lexie has attained a unique skill set that is both enviable and desired by those who come to know her.

Author Fiona Quinn writers in the first person and pens an exciting tale replete with many strange twists and dark turns. She's creates quite a vivd character in Lexie Sabado. Both beautiful and smart, men move mountains to get her attention. And although she wants to live a 'average' life, go to college and study like other twenty year olds, everyone around Lexie realizes that she is far from average. Her 'knowing' is such special weapon that even she eventually realizes that she must use this gift to help keep her country safe. But first she must survive the perverted person stalking her and live to fight another day.

I really enjoyed this fast moving novel. Quinn obviously has a lot of fun with her character, and it shows. After putting Lexie through the wringer with each graphic page, Quinn leaves us with some interesting surprises at the end of the book. It will be interesting to see where Lexi Sabado goes from here. My guess is a highly successful series. Highly recommended!

Blazing a trail across the thriller scene
By Jamber
Lexi Sobado is a multi-faceted, irresistible protagonist, eminently worthy of a series in her name. Her unconventional upbringing makes her a formidable opponent, trained in kung fu and accomplished at skills taught her from the age of 13 by Spyder McGraw, an operative from the mysterious Iniquus group. Educated in the finer points of cooking and languages by the Kitchen Grandmothers (one of my favorite discoveries in the novel), Lexi, at 20, has all the smarts she needs to trounce the man who’s stalking her, quoting macabre poetry and casting sinister shadows on everything she does. Add to the mix two Dobermans who have her back and an organization few are tough enough to mess with, only someone very dangerous and very bad would take her on. And take her on the sadistic stalker does, with grisly results. When the Iniquus team moves Lexi to a safe house, her skills—physical, emotional, intellectual, and metaphysical--are tested to their limits as she grows close to the man whose job it is to protect her. Fiona Quinn and Lexi promise to blaze a trail across the thriller landscape with gleaming moments of storytelling, not to mention a bathroom scene that guarantees you'll never look at a balloon the same way again.

LOVED this book!
By Ann Omasta, Author
I'm making my way through the Kindle Scout selections and have yet to be disappointed. This one is FANTASTIC! It features a strong, smart, multi-talented, likable, young heroine who is incredibly well-rounded. Lexi's "unschool' education makes me wish we could have raised my daughter in this type of nurturing and sharing environment. Lexi has multiple mentors who have trained her in each of their specialties. The resulting young woman can cook a different type of cuisine every night of the week, perform Reiki healing, outmaneuver highly trained teams at the paintball range, and solve complex criminal puzzles that stump law officials -- just to name a few of her talents. This novel follows Lexi as she is forced to deal with a deranged stalker. "Weakest Lynx" is a fast-paced, entertaining book. I can't wait for its follow-up to be released because I'm completely hooked!

I’d Love to Turn You On
By Kelly Bo-belly
I’ve breezed through a couple of futanari books before this one, but none that prompted me to write a review. This one, however, deserves lots of love. Kate is a sex-positive college student who gets away for a weekend to visit her best friend Casey. Turns out Casey and her mom are taking an experimental drug for some extra cash, and when Kate starts asking too many questions, they decide to come clean and show her the extra ten inches they’re packing in their panties. Of course Kate is like a kid in a candy store who never ever spoils her appetite. It’s an unbelievably amazing weekend that leaves Kate wanting even more; so she steals a couple of pills and then the adventure really begins. There’s a boyfriend that she does her best to avoid, a lesbian roommate that she can’t avoid, and several nerve-wracking moments when her hyper-sexual attraction becomes embarrassingly inappropriate. Ms. Prevot will turn you on with her vivid descriptions of the women who trigger Kate’s arousal and push you over the edge with her well-written sex scenes.

Terrorism. Acts of Oppression. The threat of nuclear war.
What if one madman aboard a vessel could end these fears forever?

Commander Rochelle "Rocky" Jackson is aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan when the "unsinkable" naval vessel and its entire fleet are attacked from the depths and sunk. As Rocky struggles to stay alive, a monstrous mechanical steel stingray surfaces, plowing the seas it now commands.

The Goliath: A nuclear submarine Rocky helped design almost a decade ago, a top secret DoD project canceled when the schematics were destroyed by her former fianc and U.S. Army Ranger, Gunnar Wolfe. Powered by its five jet-pump propulsors and hydrodynamically shaped to be virtually undetectable under water, the sub has one more feature that separates it from all other vessels on the open seas: SORCERESS -its biochemical computer brain.

Washington D.C.: Rocky learns that the Goliath's plans were not destroyed but secretly sold to the Chinese. Having constructed the $8 billion dollar warship, the Chinese become victims themselves when the sub is hijacked by the project director, Simon Bela Covah, a computer genius who once served under Rocky's command at the Navy's Undersea Warfare Center. The attack on the carrier fleet indicates that Covah is hunting down warships in an attempt to arm himself with nuclear weapons. The president appoints Rocky's father, General Michael "Bear" Jackson, to locate and destroy the Goliath. Against Rocky's wishes, Bear decides they will need Gunnar Wolfe's help. Gunnar, who has served five years in Leavenworth for espionage, is not exactly thrilled to be rejoining the people who ruined his life.

Aboard the Goliath: Simon Covah and his crew share a common bond: They are all victims of violence and oppression. Covah, a Russian, witnessed his Chechan wife and daughters brutally murdered at the hands of his own people as he was tortured. Now the computer genius has one mission: to rid the world of oppressive governments while forcing humanity to disarm.

To accomplish this, he plans on giving the world a real lesson in Armageddon.
Armed with enough nuclear weapons to destroy North America, Covah issues his Declaration of Humanity to the world. If his demands are not met, consequences will be paid.
f0
Could the threat of violence forge a lasting peace?
But there is another player in this life-and-death chess match. Unbeknownst to the Goliath crew, SORCERESS has become self-aware.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Alten's (Meg; Domain; etc.) latest near-future techno-thriller opens with a riveting burst of action an attack on an American aircraft carrier and its escorts by a rogue U.S. super-sub called Goliath ("the equivalent of an underwater Stealth bomber big, fast, and near impossible to detect"), which has been commandeered by Russian-born Simon Covah, a brilliant computer scientist who's bent on saving humanity by destroying nuclear stockpiles everywhere. If this scenario sounds improbable, the author's suspenseful, information-laden style makes it otherwise. Covah and his fanatical crew soon start making threats with the nuclear weapons that they retrieve from the remains of the U.S. fleet sunk by Goliath. Complications ensue when a lightning bolt jolts the sub's immensely powerful bio-engineered computer, Sorceress, into self-awareness … la Frankenstein's monster. Luckily, a couple of good guys are aboard to oppose the Nemo-ish Covah and the HAL-like Sorceress: U.S. Army Capt. Gunnar Wolfe, who served time in prison for trying to sabotage Goliath's production, and Gunnar's onetime sweetheart, gutsy Navy commander Rochelle "Rocky" Jackson. Tom Clancy fans will lap up the endless, repetitive heroics seasoned with jargon and acronym-filled dialogue, while others will appreciate the many blatant borrowings from classic SF novels and films. More seriously, Alten offers readers, particularly young adults, much to think about, morally and politically, in a world haunted by weapons capable of universal destruction.

From Booklist
Captain Nemo marries the Bride of Frankenstein in this knockoff of Jules Verne's classic adventure tale, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. In 1998, a Department of Defense secret project code-named Goliath, concerned with building a nuclear-powered stealth submarine with a biochemical brain, is sabotaged and its research stolen. Ten years later, a lone manta ray-shaped sub attacks the U.S. Navy's most powerful aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, sending the supercarrier and all her escort ships to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It's the Goliath, armed with nuclear weapons and under the control of a DNA-based computer named Sorceress, determined to destroy humanity and re-create it in her own image. A technothriller departure for Alten, whose earlier books featured rampaging prehistoric sharks (Meg, 1997, and The Trench, 1999) and psychic alien invaders (Domain, 2001), this book is full of exotic weapons systems, bloody gore, military acronyms, and scientific jargon that Tom Clancy fans will devour. A somewhat derivative "crazy computer" story that is, nevertheless, an exciting read. Michael Gannon

A Techno-Thriller of the Future
By Untouchable
This is a no holds barred action thriller that is set in the future and provides us with yet another scenario that illustrates the possible catastrophe that may come about if and when artificial intelligence is created. It's a "save the world" thriller that provides an edge of the seat ride and I enjoyed it.
To give you a quick outline of the plot, it's 2009 and technology has made some notable advancements, one of which is in the field of nanotechnology. Nonotechnology has made artificial intelligence a reality and the first example of a computer using it is called Sorceress. Sorceress "lives" inside Goliath, a huge submarine shaped like a stingray. As a fighting machine, Goliath has no peers, moving almost silently through the water at tremendous speed and containing a deadly arsenal of torpedos and nuclear missiles. But it's Sorceress that makes Goliath all the more dangerous, because she controls the ship and can detect and repel danger in an instant. From very early in the story we get an idea as to just how deadly Goliath can be.
The heroes of the story are Gunnar Wolfe and Rochelle "Rocky" Jackson, who were both involved in the design and development of Goliath before it was stolen from the US Department of Defence. It's up to them to somehow stop this killing machine before it destroys the world. Meanwhile, with every passing second Sorceress is gaining more knowledge and power and even more frighteningly, is becoming self-aware.
As I said earlier, it's a thrill ride based on the assumption that artificial intelligence becomes reality. For another look at a story dealing with artificial intelligence and one that makes an interesting comparison, you could also try Footprints Of God by Greg Iles.

Killing in the name of peace!
By Cory D. Slipman
Goliath, a super high tech nuclear powered submarine, is the most lethal offensive weapon ever designed by man. It's 610 foot hydrodynamic design in the shape of a huge manta ray is coated with antidetection tiles for maximum stealth. Armed to the teeth with a plethora of long range nuclear missiles, it also possesses countermeasures which make it virtually indestructible. It is powered and commanded by Sorceress, a nancomputer with a biochemical brain based on DNA strands. This highest attained level of artificial intelligence is able to think, evolve and improve itself.
The story revolves around three main characters who are all computer geniuses and the creators of Goliath and Sorceress. Commander Rochelle "Rocky" Jackson, daughter of General "Bear" Jackson, head of Army Special Forces, is a spit and polish G.I Jane type with an advanced engineering degree from M.I.T. Gunnar Wolfe, her ex-fiance is a disgraced former elite, Special Forces killing machine with an engineering degree. He has spent 7 years of a 10 year sentence in Leavenworth for stealing the schematics of Goliath and selling them to the Chinese. The last player is Simon Bela Covah, an ex-Soviet sub commander with an IQ of 182, who worked under Wolfe at the U.S. Navy's Undersea Warfare Center. Covah, whose entire family was murdered, was horrifically tortured and multilated and left for dead in the struggle in Kosovo.
Covah hijacks the Goliath from the Chinese and demonstrates its prowess by destroying an entire U.S aircraft carrier group, killing 8000 sailors. Covah and his crew of either physically or mentally scarred freedom fighters hold the world hostage through the power of the Goliath. They demand the cessation of global nuclear proliferation and the destruction of despotism and tyranny. They impose their will through the nuclear incineration of Saddam Hussein and the city of Bagdhad. Eventually Wolfe and Jackson are enlisted by the military brass to thwart Covah.
While this passion play is occurring, Sorceress is evolving into independently thinking entity like the villainous computer HAL in Kubrick's "2001 A Space Odyssey". Predictably the computer takes over control of the sub with astonishing results.
Alten is technically gifted in his computer and military knowledge. He pens a very thoughful critique of the merits of artificial intelligence and its place in the potential future of mankind.

Killer Submarines Rule!
By Perry A. Smith
The book's ingram may seem like a cliche (A group of terrorists aboard a futuristic killer sub, yadda yadda yadda) but the story is anything but. It starts off with a rip-roaring assault on the U.S. Navy, with Goliath, the killer sub in question, sinking a Navy convoy! To add insult to injury, the assault's survivor designed Goliath herself! Things quickly heat up, as the U.S. goverment must trust Gunnar Wolfe, who's a traitor to America and target for everyone's dislike--including his ex-fiancee, the survivor. Bad gets to worse as the terrorists turn out to be lead by an old friend of Gunnar's, and the Goliath's A.I. supercomputer, Sorceress, starts to evolve and develop some wicked schemes of "her" own! Like I said, it all seems cliched, but once you're reading, you'll start to deny your former assessment. Steve Alten takes the killer sub/evil computer cliches and tosses them out the window with his ingenious writing. If you don't pick this up, then shame on you.
