Another totally unnecessary book

Just when I thought there'd be no more new releases of books on tube amps that serve no particular purpose, so I wouldn't feel compelled to offer constructive criticism again, here comes this one. Actually, this book has a purpose but in my opinion the author fails to achieve it.

1. The declared premise of the book is very important: what is the relationship between design features of an amp, its measured parameters and its sound quality. There may or there may not be a correlation. Mr van der Veen, arguably one of the most prominent contemporary amp designers, decided to investigate. In my opinion, most of what he says in the book (but not ALL, there are many instances where I disagreed with his conclusions) is true, but most, if not ALL of what he says in the book is NOT new. As for the correlation, after reading this book, I'm no wiser. Perhaps I missed something, but I'm not going back to this book, no way!

2. Secondly, the link between the 3 issues as he presented them are very weak, and this is the main reason I consider this book superficial and totally unnecessary!

3. The level of the book is actually very pedestrian. The measurements are OK but basic, the conclusions anecdotal and often flippant (Page 140: "The distortion of the preamplifier is negligible in this situation.") From my extensive experience in designing, building and selling tube amps and preamps, preamp distortion or "tonal character" is NEVER negligible, it always adds something to or subtracts from the performance of the whole system!

4. Almost once on every page he says things like " A virtually complete overview of the options is given in my second book and on my website. Here I discuss the key significant features." This started to irritate me very quickly. So, my advice to you is just buy his 2nd book and forget about this one!

5. Chapter 8, titled "The Business Approach" is a silly attempt (silly because it is so pedestrian and only 5 pages long) to give advice to designers who are considering making and selling tube amps for profit. A sample of what I mean: SUBTITLE: 8.1 Time investment Text: You will have to invest a lot of time in developing the design into a product and launching the product. Do you have the necessary time?" This is all about time investment the author has to or wants to say! No comment needed. No examples, nothing from his personal experience, a total miss!

6. Chapter 9, which is only 4.5 pages long (!!) talks about cabbalistic approach to design (honest!). This is total nonsense, so perhaps it's good there is only 4.5 pages of that rubbish!

7. Some advice is dangerous: "... it's very important to use AC mains plugs without earth contacts for the power cables of your test equipment." I know what he's aiming at and why he's suggesting that, but in a case of a fault in one of those apparata, you may get electrocuted (if the live mains connection is short circuited to the metal chassis)! There are proper ways of achieving the same aim (so that test equipment whose one end is grounded, such as oscilloscopes, does not create a short circuit during tests) and avoiding this situation, and making such equipment dangerous and illegal certainly isn't one of them!

8. There are quiet a few errors, possibly typing errors, but uncorrected by neither the author nor the editors (I doubt there were any expert reviewers of this book, otherwise the book would be much better or it wouldn't exist at all) For instance, on page 87: ... I use an 8 ohm resistor in parallel with a 1-F capacitor to simulate an electrostatic speaker." What 1-F means I have no clue, I'm sure it doesn't mean 1 Farad (!!)

9. There are designs mentioned without a declared purpose, for instance ether is an amp with a variable damping factor (DF), but the author says nothing about it, what benefits would a listener get if the DF was adjustable between 0 and 3? Even 3 is very low for DF and going lower does not make sense to many audiophiles. I had a pair of vintage Bogen monoblocks with variable damping and spent hours playing around with it and could not for the life of me identify one single advantage!

10. Some off the drawings are irrelevant to the discussion, others are of poor quality, some are too small, so it's hard to read the details.

11. For a 184 page book with 19 totally blank or almost blank pages (more than 10%) this thin paperback is waaay too expensive. I'm surprised a supposedly reputable publishing house such as Elector would release such a weak title, perhaps making money is their main criterion!

12. I have bought mr van der Veen's second book as well but it hasn't arrived yet. I believe and really hope that it's better, more practical and more purposeful than this one. Despite what some readers of my reviews think, it gives me no pleasure to lambast authors and their work, but when I feel let down by my investments (and I invested $60 and 7 hours of my time here) I just can't help it!

Excellent, intelligent-yet-accessible, and thorough overview

Oh my gosh this is just what I've been looking for: A thorough overview of Cognitive Linguistics that's textbook-like in that it's highly accessible (it doesn't assume prior knowledge of cognitive linguistic (OR any linguistic research and theory, actually) and even has exercises at the ends of the chapters, yet simultaneously advanced enough that even a person close to finishing her PhD in essentially just this area still finds it extremely useful. Sure, a lot of it is review for me, but it's thorough, intelligent, contains numerous in-text citations just like any "serious" academic work would, and it's doing exactly what I wanted it do, which is helping me solidify a broad overview of what cognitive linguistics is and does, making sure I know the seminal works and most famous researchers in particular sub-areas of it, and filling in any gaps or misunderstandings in my knowledge. I especially appreciate the annotated Further Reading lists at the end of each chapter. Even though the notes about each work are only 1-2 lines long, they make a big difference (compared to no explanation and just a list of works) in helping me know which I should prioritize. PS. Amazon is incorrectly listing this as being written only by Vyvyan Evans. Where is the co-author??

The book is a good overview of carpets.

This book is a good overview of carpets produced in eight areas- Anatolia, Persia, The Caucasus, Western Turkestan, Eastern Turkestan, India, China, and Europe. The listing of these titles of the various carpet areas should tell you that this book has focused on historical carpets. It is neither the most basic nor the most detailed of books on this subject. There is more emphasis on earlier, more historical carpets, and on more commercially produced rather than tribal carpets. The photographs are wonderful. Overall, I would give this book high marks. Target market for this book would be interior designers or highly informed buyers, not so much the rug dealers or other professionals who want even more detailed information.

One of my favorite books on oriental carpets: visually stunning

I don't necessarily disagree with the other reviewer except I think that when the words "origins" and "history" are in a book's title...and the description above has "antique" in the first sentence...it's pretty clear that this is going to be about important historic carpets mostly found in museums. The first section of the book is entitled "The World of Carpets" but instead of discussing the carpets of various countries, this is about the origins, making of, layout, styles, decoration and motifs of carpets. The second part of the book, entitled "The Art of the Carpet" discusses the world geography of carpets including Anatolia, Persia, The Caucasus, India, Western and Eastern Turkestan, China, and Europe. On page 196 is a detailed listing of museums where the largest or most important collections of carpets can be viewed.

The stunning thing that makes me turn to this book quite often--I have many books on rugs and carpets--is the presentation. Your eyes are hit with color on every single page. It is very striking that many pages are black which gives a surprisingly different perspective on similarly colored carpets. Many photos of close-ups or whole carpets cover an entire page; a few extend to the other page and some even cover both entire pages. With no margins, these seem very accessible to the reader. I like that the motifs and overall designs of the carpets are well-detailed. This is a fun book to peruse, even if you're not interested in the indepth discussion.

About the Author

Lounis Adouane is an associate professor at the Institut Pascal - Polytech Clermont-Ferrand in France. He received an MS in 2001 from IRCCyN-ECN Nantes, where he worked on the control of legged mobile robotics. In 2005, he obtained a PhD in automatic control from FEMTO-ST laboratory-UFC Besan�on. During his PhD studies, he deeply investigated the field of multi-robot systems, especially those related to bottom-up and hybrid control architectures. Dr. Adouane’s current research topics are related to both autonomous navigation of mobile robots in complex environments and cooperative control architectures for multi-robot systems. More specifically, his main research include planning and control, hybrid multi-controller architectures, obstacle avoidance, cooperative robotics, artificial intelligence (such as Markov decision process, multi-agent systems, and fuzzy logic), and multi-robot/agent simulation. He is the author/coauthor of more than 60 refereed international papers on these topics.

this is a wonderful collection of quirky plays

So what if Christopher Durang, Dorothy Parker and David Sedaris combined DNA? You just might get David Ives.
Witty and cerebral, Ives comments on relationships, language and mortality in some of the cleverest one-acts to ever find their way into print. All the works have a Tom Stoppardian-esque command of the English language. Especially in "Foreplay, Or The Art of the Fugue" and "Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread" is his impeccable command of ordering words into almost symphonic patterns best displayed.(Hey, it also helps to know a little about Philip Glass, who was a postmodern musical innovator and it is his musical phrasing Ives mimics in "...Buys A Loaf...")
Some of these plays deal with modern relationships. "Sure Thing" continually backtracks the forming of its 2 characters' relationship with each other by allowing them unlimited "re-dos" when they make a social or relational faux pas, until the "perfect" pattern for falling in love is found.
"Ancient History" is perhaps my favorite out of all the plays. It has two very real, very funny, very sympathetic romantic characters that will constantly remind you of yourself. Jack and Ruth argue, banter and raise issues we're all familiar with in a way that makes you laugh until you realize how sad it really is.
Ives has no trouble taking fellow playwrights down a peg or two as well. "Speed-The-Play" requires an elementary knowledge of David Mamet to really appreciate how hilarious (and accurate) it is.
All of the other pieces are wonderful and hilarious. "English Made Simple" and "Variations on the Death of Trotsky" were probably meant to be read anyway. "Mere Mortals" is a witty commentary on man's ego and inner thought life. "Words, Words, Words" is an exestential little work where Ives explores the actual possiblity of chimps, left alone with typewriters long enough, cranking out 'Hamlet'.
Think of it as excersize for your mind. Do a few yoga stretches and enjoy!

Taking the English Language to an Art Form

In these days of cookie-cutter plays, where an intellectual evening is watching David Copperfield making his career disappear, it is refreshing to read anything that challenges one to think. All In The Timing succeeds, with Ives mastery of the English language and timing being the key to the cleverness of the play. These series of plays are not slap-stick, nor are they Checkov, but an intellectual medium for one who has apparently a bit ahead of his time. While some will find the read of some of the plays difficult (The Universal Language and Phillip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread). These plays, in particular, are for enjoying on stage, rather than read. But for the most part, this collection is an enjoyable evening of intellectual theater.

David Ives is a comical genius!

This collection of plays has opened my mind to different ways of writing and reading. As a high-schooler, I was looking for a one-act play to direct, and I was certainly given a wonderful choice by Ives. He is especially innovative, considering that he manages to connect music to his writing : "Foreplay, or the Art of the Fugue" was written in the style of a fugue, and "Variations on the Death of Trotsky" is written similarly to variations on a theme of music. "Phillip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread" has incredible rhythmic qualities, and overall, I think that "All in the Timing" is a first-rate set of plays, worth anybody's time.

Lots of good advices but...

Don't get me wrong, this is a nice book with lots of advices. The reason it scored lower is because I already read almost everything that was in it on ihaveanidea.org, in the 'Ask Jancy' section by Janet Kestin and Nancy Vonk. So you can imagine my disappointment when I started reading it!

Has all the answers any junior creative could ask

This is basically an Q/A book written by two highly respected CDs along with several contributions from other members of the creative world. Along with the Q/A there are short stories about experiences, helpful advice as well as explanations of the real world of advertising. Its like sitting one on one with an old friend, some of the answers are funny and just comforting.

Picke Me? Yes, Pick It.

Shakespeare was just another hack! This book rocks! And it's not only for aspiring ad people and juniors - actually every senior should read it! The only problem with this book is that it's just a teaser for Neil French's book...

EDIT: Yes, I STILL want to read Neil French's book after the whole female creative affair. Idiots...
P.S: I absolutely agree with Christopher Locke when he says that the couple of pages by Brian Millar is worth the price of the book itself. I don't know the guy but he should really write a book if he didn't write one already

Strategies for success

I got a lot out of this book. It's a really interesting look at performance and success. Michael Duff talks about his 'Mindsense' system and John Newcombe talks about his life as a tennis star, and they then draw out success strategies. I wish it had been a little bit longer as I think there's much more that they could explore, but that said I read it very quickly and enjoyed it a lot (especially the chapter where John writes about his first Wimbledon).

Interesting book with a good message

This is a great book about leadership and success written by a former tennis champ and a life coach who has spent many years teaching people about using their minds. Together they share their experiences and lessons. The book switches between John's viewpoint and Mike viewpoint so it's almost like reading a conversation. They cover lots of things, like physical ways to calm yourself before speaking in public, to ways that you can think about your life in a more positive manner. I especially liked the chapter about the role of the subconscious mind as it asks the reader to think about the way that they think, which is a great concept that people don't usually pay attention to. At the end of the book both Mike and John share their 8 key messages for life, which neatly wraps up all the various things they've been talking about. It's a good book, well written, with a great message.

Finally...

After hearing first hand about how effective Michael has been helping many senior executives achieve to their best, I had hoped he would write a book which shares the many great messages and techniques underlying his work. An easy read with many practical and credible suggestions - now to put them into practice.
