CLASSIC ANNE STUART!!

With some authors I just NEED to have every book they've written and Anne Stuart is one of them. If you've read any of her books (historical or modern) you know she goes in for a dark hero who is usually more bad than good (or maybe I should say so bad he's good). At any rate, I stumbled across this earlier book and WOW!!! What a ride. It takes place right after the French Revolution and our French heroine has managed to survive but not without a load of emotional scars. She is living in England when low and behold she is presented with the opportunity to take revenge on the Englishman (our hero) she blames for all the woes she and her family suffered during the reign of terror. And we're off. . . Needless to say things don't go as she plans. Great story line, great characters who are FULLY developed and complex. Wonderful "secondary character" love story. Order this book! It is worth the extra you will have to pay for a used copy. A definite keeper to add to your Anne Stuart collection. It's 394 sexy pages of adventure, tears and pleasure!

Strange, weakly-motivated characters, in a plot that spins around

This book was described to me as a superlative example of the romance genre.

Well...it wasn't superlative for me. First of all, I did not buy the reason that had Nicholas being the tormented dark hero that he was. It was very lame and confused. I *think* what the author wanted to say, is that Nicholas's father didn't love him -- or at least, Nicholas *thought* his father didn't love him, and when his older brother died and Nicholas was all that was left, his father regretted that and let Nicholas know it. So, this was Nicholas's excuse to become a womanizing rakehell bent on self-destruction.

Secondly, I couldn't come to terms with Nicholas refusing to help Ghislaine's family when they were threatened by the oncoming French Revolution. He really loved her at that time, although she was only 15. But Nicholas gets a letter telling him his father's dead, so he uses THAT as an excuse to become all hard & cold, and tells Ghislaine's father he won't take her out of the country? Huh? This is the love of your life - your first love no less - the one person who makes you feel all tender & happy - and you're going to go haywire and not help her or her family, because you got a letter telling you your father's dead, and suddenly you feel unlovable?

More reasonably, I could see Nicholas feeling unlovable at age 35 after years of being a skanky rake, but at age 22, Nicholas should have been more mallable and willing to believe in love. But of course, if he had helped Gilly's family, there would no further story, because Gilly wouldn't have had anything to hate him for!

And that brings me to my third point: (SPOILERS) How can you ever love someone who left you in a very dangerous situtation that ultimately destroyed your family? Nicholas's failure to come to their aid brings utter destruction and Gilly's parents are killed. And she's left to sell herself on the streets of Paris. Excuse me, but all that would DEFINITELY come between me and whatever uncontrollable attraction I felt for a man. Even a mere fictional character should have more sense. (END SPOILERS)

I also thought the subplot between Ellen & Tony was just a chore to read, not a bore necessarily, but a chore. If one more person or happenstance interrupted their potential lovemaking, I was going to SCREAM bloody murder. I hate it when authors play around that way -- bringing their characters to the brink, and then having someone walk in on them, or having a cat knock over a dish; over and over. It doesn't increase the dramatic or sensual tension - it just gets old, FAST, and annoying. Despite the flimsy reasons given for the choices they made, Gilly and Nicholas were by far a more interesting couple than Ellen and Tony. I suppose the author wanted a 'light' sub-story to counterbalance the 'dark' romance of Gilly and Nicholas but Ellen and Tony are two average characters; just blah. Their ho-hum romance never really took off.

The constantly changing settings gave me a headache. The characters are whipped from England to Scotland to Holland to Venice to France, (and flashbacks to Gilly's youth in France as well). (SPOILER ALERT) When Nicholas had the battle with the man who raped Gilly (entirely due to Nicholas' failing to rescue her, I could not forget) it was so melodramatic. And then he ends up killing the guy who sold her to the madam. (END OF SPOILER)

I guess the author was trying to redeem Nicholas in the heroine's eyes - well, it worked for the Gilly, more fool her, but just didn't work for me.

2 stars for the somewhat intriguing heroine with a vengeful backbone (I much preferred Gilly when she wanted to poison Nicholas) but, the unbelieveable motivations of the main characters; weak secondary characters, and really melodramatic actions in the last few chapters soured this story.

mesermizing, haunting, unforgettable, Stuart at her best!

I thought I had read every book Anne Stuart had written, but somehow, I missed this wonderful one. Fortunately, I discovered one listed on amazon.com used, because for some stupid reason, Avon doesn't have the good sense to keep this one in reprint. It another of Stuart's display of genius, that mesmerizes the reader to where you cannot put it down. She catches you up from page one and won't let you go, until she puts you through an emotional ringer. She gives you another of those Gamma-Rogue Males that has a black heart and a blacker soul.
Ghislaine de Lorgny is out to kill Nicholas Blackthorne - along with numerous cuckolded husbands - and she has plenty of reasons. Gilly blames the death of her family on the guillotine and the loss of her virtue at Blackthone's door. When Gilly was fifteen, Nicholas visited his Godparents (Gilly's parents) just as The Terror was sweeping through France. Gilly fell in love with the beautiful Nicholas, and Nicholas demonstrated affection for Gilly. But when her father begs Nicholas to take her to England, away from Napoleon's nightmare reign, Nicholas coldly dismisses him, unknowingly consigning Gilly's family to death. She escaped with her 12-year-old brother onto the streets of Paris, where she watched her parents killed. Left to see to her brother's and her survival, the nightmare continued. An evil man sold Gilly into prostitution and had her brother carried away, likely killed. Gilly has carried that hatred for ten years, but finally her time for revenge has come.
Nicholas Blackthorne, the last of the mad Blackthornes, has lived his life knowing his mother and father hated that his brother had died instead of him. So, he did everything he could to live up to the mad Blackthorne's reputation. He lives with so many regrets, one being he feels responsible for the de Lorgny family going under the blade. When Gilly's father asked Nicholas to take her to England, Nicholas had just received a letter telling of his father's dead so he'd carelessly brushed off the man. For the last ten years, Nicholas believe Gilly was killed with her parents; her face has haunted his mind.
He does not recognize Gilly as the chef his cousin Ellen hired a year ago, but he soon finds out after Gilly tries to poison him. Instead of turning her over to the local magistrate, he takes Gilly prisoner and spirits her off to Scotland, then later drags her across Europe.
Hot on their heels is his cousin Ellen and Tony. Ellen has always loved Tony, but he has been more of a big brother to her. Tony has been trying for the last two years to shift their relationship, but fears he has left it too late. He sees this rescue of Gilly as a means to be close to Ellen and change her thinking towards him. Their secondary romance makes this into two loves stories, not just one.
Nicholas Blackthorne is one of Stuart's total bad boys she delights making you love. Gilly is unforgettable, her pain and betrayal stings, showing her indomitable spirit. The reader is exhausted after their emotional battles. It's one of those books you won't ever be able to forget.

About the Author
Christopher Higman graduated in 1966 from the University of Oxford and received his M.Sc. from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His first contact with gasification was commissioning a producer gas plant in South Africa in 1968. He jopined Lurgi in 1975 and where he spent the next 27 years, mostly involved with gasification and related technologies. He has been responsible for design, project management and start up of a number of ammonia and methanol plants based on the gasification of heavy residues. Other projects for which he was responsible include the gas production units at both the Bintulu and Mossel Bay gas-to-liquids plants and the IGCC/hydrogen production facility at Shell’s Pernis, Netherlands refinery. Before taking up a corporate management position in 1997, he was Head of Gas Technology at Lurgi �l�Gas�Chemie GmbH.
He is the author of various papers on gasification technology and is a contributor to “Ullmann’s Encyclopaedia of Industrial Chemistry”. He has also been a visiting lecturer at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Oxford. He has a number of patents in the field.
At present Mr. Higman is researching into aspects of soot management in heavy oil gasification plants at the Engler-Bunte-Institute at the University of Karlsruhe.

My Triathlon Bible

I first bought IronFit back in 2008 when I registered for my first Ironman triathlon. My goal as most first timers was to finish. Don provides the information found in other books but in a way that is easy to follow and understand which allows you to concentrate on the training. His training schedules, motivational biographies and training tips keeps me going back to the book for inspiration during the harder weeks of training. I found his race day guidance,with an emphaisis on nutrition a great help on race day.
My goal for my first Ironman was to finish, but following Don's IronFit, I exceeded that and finished fourth in my age group at Ironman Florida.
I have recently purchaesed the 2nd edition of IronFit for the updated training schedules as I prepare for my second attempt at the Ironman. Thanks Don!

Buy This Book, Do What Don Fink Says, Become An Ironman

This is one of my favorite books, all-time. Here's why: The Be Ironfit program provided me with the time efficient training plans and advice to become an Ironman in 2008, and again in 2009 (and beyond).

Don Fink (an Ironman age group legend), draws upon his vast racing and coaching experience to inspire and prepare any triathlete to achieve the Ironman dream. Just as important, before I finished reading Be Ironfit (the first time) I felt belief replace my doubts about whether I could ever train for and race 140.6 miles.

This 2nd edition is even more comprehensive (I've read and studied both editions). It updates the latest core and strength training techniques with Don's tried and true time-efficient heart rate based training and swim/bike/run techniques advice. It is extremely well-written and organized and provides invaluable information and tips on: time management, nutrition, pre-race, race day, post race, race selection, mental strategies, and more. You can choose to follow the competitive program, the intermediate program, or the 'just finish' strategy.

With Don's guidance, and this revised edition in hand, I am training for my third Ironman race this year. With consistent adherence to Don's training plans and advice, I continue to get faster and faster. In fact, my P.R.'s continue to drop significantly at all distances (from sprint to olympic to 70.3 to 140.6) -- at the age of 45!

Outstanding read and resource

If you are planning on racing an Ironman in the coming year, I would go so far as to say you have to buy this book. It will probably be the best investment you will make helping you accomplish your athletic goals and allowing you to have more fun along the way. I've raced 2 Ironmans, a Half Ironman, and 5 marathons over the past 3 years and I still go back and re-read certain chapters of BeIronFit. I even take it with me to my races, it's that good.

First of all, Don Fink is one of the most experienced and accomplished coaches in triathlon today. His approach, advice, and training plans have worked for countless athletes at all levels (from beginner to elite). I wouldn't follow a training philosophy or plan if it were not proven. My time and goals are too important to me.

BeIronFit is an exceptional read and resource. Very well written. What's remarkable about the book is that there is something there for everyone. If your goal is to finish your first Ironman or to qualify for Kona, I believe you will benefit from reading this book. Triathlon can be a complicated sport and the book goes into appropriate detail but not overly so. I think the reason I continue to go back to the book is that the philosophy, tips and advice to training and racing are sound - almost fundamental truths. Don not only explains exactly what you need to do day by day, week by week (laid out in your training plan), he clearly explains his coaching philosophy so that you understand exactly why you are doing certain workouts during the different phases of training.

What's interesting about Don and perhaps one of the reasons why he has been such a successful coach is his background. He became an elite triathlete while managing a successful and demanding career on Wall Street. On one level, his story is inspirational. I think many of us dream (maybe secretly) of becoming elite athletes while working full time. More importantly though, he understands what it's like to have a family, manage a career and train for ironman - all at the same time. As a result, this book is packed with practical advice and tips for the rest of us. In addition, throughout the book, Don features several athletes he has worked with where they share their own experiences and advice. Very helpful.

Getting to the starting line is more than half the battle. Reading this book will help you get there healthy, physically prepared, and mentally confident. As a result, you will have more fun and race faster, of that I'm confident.

Best rock book in years

This is the best rock book written in years. It unveils the truth behind Kiss and the tremendous amounts of money blown by the members and manager, Bill Aucoin. Gene Simmons tends to gloss over the reality that he too participated in the financial fiasco that was their 79 tour. However, in a fair and even handed way, CK Lendt tells how the Kiss members and manager foolishly spent money that could have been better invested.
In fact, the reunion tours of 96 and thereafter really gave the members the financial stability that they'd lost in the late 70's.
The irony of Kiss is that without Ace and Peter they were nothing but a sinking nostalagia act. With the reunion tour and make-up back on and Ace and Peter in the band the group suddenly became interesting.
In the end, the great success of Kiss is not the bluster of Gene Simmons or posturings of Paul Stanley but the dynamic of all four members--Ace, Peter, Gene and Paul.
This book is honest and brilliant in it's review of the story of Kiss and of the music business. Buy it and enjoy the behind the scenes look at a fascinating world.

Fascinating...

Written by one of KISS's key business managers, this is a very interesting look at the KISS organization from 1976 to 1989. One of the components that makes it so interesting is that despite working for the band, the author was hardly a hard rock fan and avoids the trappings of star worship as well as refraining from doing an intentional hatchet-job on the group. Sort of a Rock n' Roll Economics 101 textbook at times, but even these parts are written in an easy-to-understand style. An engaging tale of a band who rose to stratospheric heights, then came crashing down, mostly due to their own hubris. A lot of the myths behind the band are exposed, but the truth is even more interesting.

This is the first rock biography I've read. The author covers the peak and the long fall of Kiss pretty well, and seems to be honest - there don't seem to be too many axes to grind and he doesn't badmouth all of the members. The financial information is revealing, I never realised how much bands can make on those year-long tours where they hit everywhere. There's a boring bit in the middle about Diana Ross, but I skipped that. Recommended to fans of the group who want an insider view.

This is a very interesting story one I had never ...

This is a very interesting story one I had never heard before I read this book, the book opens the door to another realm an other worldly realm that should be explored and understood not closed and left to the imagination. That's what it was for me a jumping off point to seek real answers not the cultural superficial ones. For this I thank the author who has left it up to the reader to decide for themselves what the entity was.

About the Author

Kelly Fiore has a BA in English from Salisbury University and an MFA in Poetry from West Virginia University. She has received two Individual Artist Grants from the Mid Atlantic Arts Council. She is the author of TASTE TEST, JUST LIKE THE MOVIES, and THICKER THAN WATER. Kelly lives in West Virginia with one husband, three kids, two dogs, a cat, and a hedgehog.

A bumpy ride that ended enjoyable.

If you would have asked me about 75 pages in if I thought I would end up liking this book, I would quickly have said “nope”. I was instantly turned off by one of the two narrators (I’ll explain why later) and I began dreading her chapters but I finally got past that and I’m glad that I did. I ended up liking this book and I actually ended up rooting for the narrator that I previously disliked.

To begin, it takes some big kahunas to act out movie scenes for a guy; whether you are already dating him or are trying to attract his attention, it’s incredibly brave. I have to give it to these girls; they made a pact and followed it through. The story revolves around Marijke and Lily, two girls who are strangers until their chance meeting at the movie theater. Now, I am an avid movie watcher/goer which was probably what attracted me to the book and I loved that this all started at a movie theater. Kelly used a good mix of old and new movies as reference points for these girls and I really enjoyed them, especially the frequent 90’s references which all made me grin like crazy. I didn’t exactly love the way that the movies were tied in, I felt like they could have made a bigger impact, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Marijke and Lily are an interesting pair, they are complete opposites and strangers before their chance meeting but throughout the book a strong friendship is forged. This friendship is easily the best part of this book, everyone is so focused on finding a happily ever after that they forgo friends but their quest for love actually brought these two girls together. I’m not saying that it’s anywhere as good as the friendship in Open Road Summer but that is a nearly impossible standard to compare to. Their friendship was an accurate portrayal of friendships, they changed each other for the better and the worse; Marijke gave Lily a makeover which caused some identity issues but they also taught each other how to communicate and deal with situations. It was a give and take relationship which was interesting to read.

Marijke. Marijke. Marijke. I was so frustrated with Marijke’s character when I first started this book, I wanted to smack her in the head so many times that I lost count. Her boyfriend Tommy, who can be the world’s biggest douchebag, was her world and she ended up trading her identity for that of “Tommy’s girlfriend”, effectively losing herself and her friends. She revolved around Tommy and she didn’t even realize that she lost everything that used to be important to her until Lily came into the picture, a true friend who wasn’t afraid to stand up to Marijke.

It got to the point where I didn’t want to read anymore but when I evaluated why, I realized that it was personal. It hit a little too close to home. I was in a relationship and it wasn’t good, I was consumed and I couldn’t even see. My friends would try to talk sense into me but I would never listen. I was Marijke but less athletic and vocal and annoying, I’d like to think. Since that relationship, I have been an advocate for smart dating and not dating just to date, especially not dating an attractive douchebag. I just took this situation so personally and when she kept forgiving him, I was more frustrated than I should have been. I understand that now. After that, I started to understand Marijke and I was so proud of her again and again, there was real growth in this book.

Overall, I did really enjoy this book. It was a light read that went by fast with a great message that was weaved throughout the entire book. I loved the emphasis on friendship and the lessons that both girls learned along the way. There were some questionable things but as a whole, I really enjoyed this book.

Perfect summer read, so cute

It's summer, so I imagine a lot of people are like me and constantly looking for light, fun reads that make you feel happy when you're done. That's what I was in the mood for when I picked this up, and that's exactly what I got. At the same time, there's more than just romance and girls trying to win boys to this one.

While, yes, Marijke and Lily are trying to solve their love-life problems through movie scenes, it's their new friendship that shines in Just Like the Movies. Marijke is having boyfriend troubles, but she's let everything in her life beside Tommy and track fall by the wayside. And Lily's been too focused on being an invisible star student to have made any friends. It's in their mutual love of romantic movies and desire to improve their love lives that they're drawn together, but they get friendship out of the deal. Yes, I love a happy, romantic ending, but Marijke and Lily's friendship is the happy ending I loved more.

Otherwise, all through Just Like the Movies, you're treated to romantic movie mentions and homages. Some don't go off without hitches, but they're fun and a treat to read. Watching Marijke and Lily learn what they deserve and should expect from the guys in their lives is nice, too. Marijke sees that how she's put herself to the side for Tommy is not right and Lily learns that putting yourself out there, fighting for what you want is worth the risk.

Just Like the Movies is the perfect summer read. It's got cute romantic scenes, new friendship, and enough smile-worthy scenes to leave you a happy goof at the end of the book.

Have you ever wished you could be the star of your very own romantic comedy? Have you ever imagined all these extravagant romantic gestures and winning one liners being a part of your day-to-day life? Have you ever wanted to get swept off your feet by your one true love? I know I have! (And I’m pretty lucky since it’s happened for me!)

Just Like the Movies appealed to my inner romantic who enjoys being swept off my feet. A contemporary about two girls who try to make movie magic happen in their real lives? YES PLEASE. This is yet another novel in the string of contemporaries I’ve been reading that is perfect for this warmer weather we’re currently experiencing. It’s light, it’s fun and it’s entertaining – all a recipe for a good beach read, if you ask me.

There are two narrators in this novel: Marijke & Lily. The girls are extremely different, and their paths would never have crossed save for a fateful incident at an old-time movie theater. I really liked that their differences were so pronounced! It made it easier to distinguish between them, and it felt even more like a movie unfolding in front of my eyes (“two very different girls are about to learn the meaning of friendship”). Their friendship was really great, because they pushed each other to get out of their comfort zones and embrace endless possibilities and because they were extremely supportive of each other.

Marijke is a hurdle track star, who happens to be dating one of the most crush-worthy boys at their high school. While it seems like everything in her life is perfect (lovey dovey parents, being part of a power couple, track star status), there’s actually a lot that’s not quite what it seems. Lily, on the other hand, is an introvert, constantly working on volunteer projects and school stuff as a “behind the scenes” girl. While she’s managed to succeed in her projects and at school, she’s rendered nearly invisible to the student body… which sucks when she has a crush on one of the coolest guys at school.

Of the two girls, I personally connected more with Lily. She was a pretty accurate embodiment of what I was like in high school – willing to work behind the scenes, but also wanting to be noticed at least a little. Her story (especially when it came to her crush Joe) was so fun to read! I liked seeing her ease out of that shell, thanks to some prodding from Marijke, and taking matters into her own hands. Even though she fell down (figuratively) more than once, it was still endearing (and totally movie-worthy) to see her get up again. I was definitely rooting for her to get a happy ending from the get go!

But really, one of the best things about Just Like the Movies is that it focuses more on the friendship between Marijke & Lily. Sure, they’re working towards a common goal of getting the boys they like/love to like/love them back, and that adds a romantic angle to everything! But what matters is that they form a friendship that develops into something neither of them can imagine their lives without – and I really liked that!

I laughed, I grinned, I swooned. Just Like the Movies had me daydreaming of my own romantic-moment-from-a-film come to life (and giggling with glee over the multiple references to some of my favorite films ever!). If you’re in the mood for a fluffy contemporary novel to enjoy, you should definitely give this one a shot!
