Incorrect Answer Key

This book is easy to read and comprehend for now. I just started the semester a week ago, so I am only 3 chapters in. I gave this 3 stars because the answer key in the back of the book is incorrect! I wanted to check my answers and some (not all) answers don't make any sense. Very disappointing. This should have been fixed prior to releasing the book to students who are trying to learn.

Nice Little Toolbox for Secondary Educators

I appreciated both the support and criticism given to various components of the Common Core. The authors seem to move around and through the modern political fashion just fine as they present concrete examples of the functional teaching of reading. The folksy style makes the book accessible, and many see it as a strength. I prefer just a bit more formality. Some of the "research" used to support the techniques refers to educator blog posts, but much of it does appear to be authentic educational research of varying quality. The techniques do have strong anecdotal support. In a sentence: The two authors do appear to know their business, and communicate it succinctly and accessibly.

This book is an absolute must read for any non-English teacher in high school- although it would serve as a good reminder to ela teachers as well. I could absolutely see this book being approached as a PLC book study for groups trying to close the achievement gap in the area of secondary literacy- so many explicit strategies that could help a school building or department get traction towards reaching their goals.

It's difficult to describe in polite language how bad this book is

It's difficult to describe in polite language how bad this book is. It is full of typos and leaves out a lot of critical information. When you are tested, you will come across numerous important terms never mentioned in this book, especially regarding regulation. The online prep test is just as bad. Again, there are numerous typos, awkwardly worded questions, and even better, questions with incorrect answers. The questions in the test bank were clearly generated by computer and not proof-written. Some of the test questions are such a jumble of words and grammar they make no sense at all. There are many duplicate questions. Also, the practice questions are too easy; the level of difficulty is much higher on the actual exam. As an industry veteran I was able to muddle through and pass the exam despite this book, but a newcomer will be woefully under-prepared if this terrible book is their only study material. This is a very expensive book, but the editors of this book and prep test should be embarrassed regardless of the price. Please don't buy this book. One other note: the title of this book is updated every year to reflect the current year, so whenever the title changes, all the prior bad reviews go away. Go look back at the reviews for the 2015 edition and you'll see similar comments to mine. I wish I had done that.

Good book overall / Few errors that should be corrected

Background info: Having worked as a Futures Trader outside the US, I wasn't required to write the Series 3 exam. Recently, I applied to a few futures trading positions in the US and thought it would be a good idea to write the exam just in case. Aside from the regulation chapter, I was already familiar and comfortable with the concepts explained in this book.

Book review: It's a good book overall. It explains concepts well without over-complicating them. However, for the price you pay, and the fact that they release a new edition every year, it's such a shame that there are errors in the book. I'm not talking about grammatical errors or typos because that's not the end of the world when you're reading text book material; there are complicated concepts that the book explains incorrectly! To be fair, there are very few of these errors, but there shouldn't be any at all! Even one is too many. If you don't have a strong background in Futures you will not catch these errors, and if you do, you will waste valuable time questioning yourself and making sure you are right because the book says otherwise.

Overall, I still recommend this book. It's a bit pricey if you buy the paper version, so I bought the kindle version. I enjoyed reading it and it explains concepts clearly (except for the few errors I mentioned above).

These 65 pieces and 6 etudes are originally found in Ferdinando Carulli's "Complete Method For The Guitar, op. 241". This method is the last iteration of his original guitar method (op. 27), the first modern method for guitar. Originally published as "44 Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies", the present edition (based on an edition published by Oliver Ditson Company, Boston) in fact yields the following: 56 numbered studies, 2 slur studies, 1 rondo for all positions, 4 interval studies, 2 studies in harmonics and the 6 (rather didactic) etudes. (Not included in the present volume are numerous short scale exercises and cadences. These can be found in more complete and thorough treatments in numerous modern methods.) These studies clearly demonstrate Carulli's familiarity with his Italian operatic heritage. They are nearly all in recognizable song forms and the compositional style is simple melody with harmonic accompaniment. Counterpoint is almost totally absent. Yet within these limits Carulli creates very fine music indeed. Great care was taken to make this a performing edition. All of the pieces fit on 1 or 2 pages. The few that take 3 pages have page turns inserted in logical places. The few fingerings presented are found in the Ditson edition and are logical and obvious. It is hoped that these pieces will present a delightful and useful supplement to the studies of Sor and Giuliani published during the same period. They are truly progressive; the first 10 or so are in the keys of C, G or D (and their relative minors), all in first position, using mostly tonic and dominant harmony and can be learned by most students in just a few lessons. They continue to increase in complexity and difficulty through the final 16 (studies 41-56), which are some of the most delightful music written for guitar. I hope you all enjoy working on and performing these works as much as I have!

He has studied at the Berklee College of Music and is currently guitarist with the US Army Blues of The US Army Band (Pershing's Own).
