About the Author
Eihei Dogen Zenji was born in Japan on January 19, 1200. Considered to be the founding teacher of the Soto school of Zen, he was the author of many books and tracts, and his most important work, The Shobogenzo (Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma), was collected into 95 fascicles regarding practice and enlightenment. He died in Kyoto on September 22, 1253.

This is a wonderful book for anyone practicing in Dogen's lineage, or interesting in understanding his writings. Genjokoan is a poetic, intellectual, and spiritual masterpiece, truly a gem of world spiritual literature. This short text is on par, in my opinion, with much longer classics like the Bhagavadgita, Ashtavakragita, Cloud of Unknowing, or Dhammapada. It is, however, like all of Dogen's writings, a very difficult read which requires repeated, contemplative study and a background in Buddhist thought. The commentaries in this text help to open Genjokoan for readers, but are themselves difficult texts which require repeated readings and contemplation. So caveat emptor.

That said, these commentaries are wonderful. The commentary by Nishiari Bokusan alone is worth buying the book for. Nishiari Bokusan is famous as the Zen monk who, when faced with death at the hands of some samurais, said, "Well, if you're going to kill me, I might as well have some saki." He then calmly and mindfully raised a cup to his lips and savoured it as if he was alone in the room. The samurais, disoriented and chagrined, simply left. Later Nishiari said, "I made no room for them in my world, so they couldn't find a foothold there."

I received this book as a gift for my 42nd birthday. I still remember coming up the stairs to see what mom had made for breakfast, and there it was, howling at me beside my Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich and my Jimmy Beam breakfast drink. I'd never seen such majesty before, beckoning at me and sending ripples across my stomach and into my nipples. My other Spindle Metrology books don't stand up to the sheer majesty of the illustrations in this book. You may need another set of nails to bite on after your own are depleted to nothing but stubby, crippled nubs. Eric Marsh keeps you guessing until the very end and wanting more.

I am satisfied to know that I was able to enjoy this book before, surely enough, it hits Oprah's book club and is turned into a movie. I will be able to tell people I read the book before it was a movie, and people will respect that.

A Meditative Walk on Water

McFarlane's Silt is a lyrical essay on the Broomway,the public pathway across the Somerset levels. To read it is to walk at his side along this mystical path; to be at once fascinated by the experience of walking on water, and terrified by the danger of being overtaken by the incoming tide. A book for the mindful walker, a walking meditation. David Quentin's photographs are disappointing when viewed on Kindle, and this reviewer felt his Afterword, written in a more academic style, while interesting on points of law, added very little to the enjoyment of Silt. Perhaps it should be published separately.

About the Author
David Jett Pittenger received his B.A. in Psychology from the College of Wooster, his Master's of Science from Texas A & M University, and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Georgia. He is currently an Associate Professor and Chair in the department of Psychology at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. In addition to teaching courses in statistics and research design, David teaches courses in physiological psychology, psychometrics, learning and behavior, and cognitive psychology. David has many interests in psychology and has written articles on the partial reinforcement extinction effect, the ethical responsibilities of psychologists, the validity of personality inventories, and the teaching of psychology. David has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career, including the David A. Leach Award for Outstanding Student in Experimental Psychology at the College of Wooster, the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award at the University of Georgia, and the McCoy Professor of Psychology-Award for Teaching Excellence at Marietta College. Really good

A unique introductory book in statistics. The hallmark of this book is nodoubt the clarity of detailed explanations of fundamental statistical concepts. A lot of invaluable material and explanantions here not to be found in other textbooks on statistics!
Highlights that spring to my mind are the excellent treatments of averages, correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing. A very important topic (usually missing in most textbooks) is the strength of evidence in hypothesis and significiance testing and is treated very nicely in various parts of the books. This book should not be missed by beginners (and probably experts) in the field.

I am using this book for an online graduate statistics course, so there is little direction from a formal instructor. All of my information so far is from this book. It is easy to read and the examples are easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone who is beginning the journey into statistics...very helpful
