About the Author
Simon Lancaster is one of the world's top speechwriters. He first became a speechwriter in the late 1990s, working for members of Tony Blair's Cabinet. A BOOK that should be read by anyone interested in communicating - I believe that's all of us. How to tell someone about how unique and applicable this book is to understanding how we understand and therefore how we ought to communicate to people. Nothing I can say here will say it better than he has. Simon, is a once in a generation kind of person who can explain something that Western Civilization has been seeking to understand for the last 2,500 years. Buy it, apply it, and enjoy it!!!!

classic MAD

I have been a MAD magazine fan for eons. I used to have a copy of issue #1, but when I went away to school my mother got rid of my MADs but kept what she considered valuable, like old National Geographics. It's nice to see that the usual gang of idiots are still at work and doing more of the same.

basic tools to do a basic job

Computers do one basic job, they process data. Often, you do not have control over the output format of the data, but the stuff you want in in there somewhere. So you capture the output to a file, and then chop and hack at it with a text editor to get the data you want in format somewhat like you want.
You can either spend the rest of eternity with a text editor or get these guys, and learn a bit to instruct them to do totally boring but useful drudgery. And perhaps learn about regular expressions and pattern matching. And then do something interesting.
Don't worry, you will have do do it again, if for no other reason than the entity that controls the format of the data decided to change it, for no other reason than to annoy and confound you. But, since you have learned about pattern matching, a minor change will fix it, and you can go back to whatever.
The specific purpose this time was to avoid subscribing to a listing service for cable tv programming. Zap2it publishes the listings on most newspaper websites, and program called wget allows me to write these listings to a file. Then using sed to slice and dice allows me to read simply formatted listings, and eventually feed them to a recording system.

Great reference if you work in sed and awk regularly, or if you are adding them to your workflow. This has solid examples that the man pages just dont have the depth to include, but are super useful in real world scenarios.

Useful to learn it, not for experienced users, and not a reference book either.

I have a science background and am a regular user of unix systems, although I am not a professional IT'er. Therefore I was already familiar with sed and awk. I was looking for a single book that would give a good overview of all functions on a more-than-beginners-level and at the same time could serve as a reference. Perhaps not as 'the ultimate reference' but good enough for professionals who want to use sed and awk in a pragmatic way. With this I mean: a book you can turn to if you just want to write a little program/script that get's the job done.

This is not that book. I found this book useful in explaining the basics of sed and awk. There is also a quick reference section on both sed and awk. However, my overall observation is that the level of this book is not very advanced and therefore did not do the job for me. I would recommend this book to beginners and not to people who have already used sed and awk themselves. The level is basic, the reference sections are too brief and incomplete to be really 'reference sections'. I am still looking for a real reference book.

Tip: if you want to get started with sed and awk, search the internet for "sed one-liners" and "awk one-liners": these are one-line example 'programs' or commands that most likely will do what you are looking for. And if not, they are helpful to get you going and make some trivial changes so that the program does do what you need. No need for buying a book.

About the Author

Musical artist ELIZABETH SWADOS is the author of twelve children’s books, four novels, two collections of poetry, a collection of short non-fiction, and two books on creating musical theater for young people. Perhaps best known for her Broadway and international hit Runaways, she has composed, written, and directed theater for over thirty years. Her works for theater include the Obie Award-winning Trilogy and Alice at the Palace. Swados also teaches full time in the drama department of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and has taught at The New School’s Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts as a visiting artist. Her articles have been published in the New York Times, New York Times Magazine, and Vogue. Her other accolades include three Obie Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, Ford Fellowship, Helen Hayes Award, Lila Acheson Wallace award, and a Special International PEN Citation.

The in-your-face, simple genius of this book is difficult to describe. I would not have thought a book of captioned cartoons could so powerfully and honestly draw (pun intended) the reader into profound, empathetic understanding of how depression feels as it is lived. If one picture is worth a thousand words, these hundreds of powerful pictures are worth far more than mere words could ever communicate. Everything about this book pulls the reader in, and pulls the reader along, effortlessly and entertainingly.

Additional power is gained in that the presentation is autobiographical, tragically painful in some portions, but exceptionally witty throughout.

If you have ever been depressed, or know anyone who is or has been, please BUY THIS BOOK. I would like to recommend it to all the readers of my study, Mormon Women, Prozac� and Therapy. Reading the book is, quite honestly, genuinely therapeutic.

One of the best books written on depression

As a licensed clinical social worker, I give this book my highest rating and will be recommending it to everyone that suffers from depression, as well as their friends and loved ones. In straightforward and humorous terms, Ms. Swados talks about the course of her depression and treatment. She discusses how distorted her thinking becomes during periods of increased depression and how her functional status suffers. The pictures are moving, sad and funny at the same time. Depression has a tendency to slow down thinking, and I view this book as being helpful during this periods due to it's simple layout. There is no judgement here, and no quick fix or solution to the struggle of depression. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

About the Author
RHODA KUFLIK is a World War II survivor whose family was forced to move from Poland, where she was born, to Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Italy until they could finally make it to America. She was 11 years old when she arrived in Brooklyn, NY, and started her formal schooling. A graduate of Brooklyn College with a major in psychology, Kuflik became a social worker. She married and had three children. She and her husband now divide their time between New Jersey and Florida, where Rhoda has pursued her interest in singing Yiddish songs. She brings a lot of pleasure to scores of people in Florida who have not heard these songs (or this language) in many years.
