Goes beyond public opinion and into social constructs

I read the book for the first time as a student of public opinion in Singapore where the issue, because of government policies, is very restricted and controlled.
The book gives the reader the possibility to comprehend public opinion from a wide range of topics (form political to historical, sociological and even psychological). It provides with plenty of examples, theories and studies done by the leading experts of leading universities where public opinion is studied, and, at the same time it explains the four W of such theories. It carries the reader from the meaning of public opinion to the impact of it in the construction of society, policies, social norms, religions, etc. It is concrete, profound and easy to read, as well as amazingly interesting.

Great Advice, but no follow through

When I got this book, I couldn't put it down. After reading it, I was anxious to get started on setting my goals as Mr Brown described in chapter 16, but I hit a roadblock. Mr. Brown gives an example of the goal planner, but he didn't show how the math works to get the amount one should save each month. Mr. Brown even states,

"The following goal-setting forms will serve as a map in guiding you toward your desired financial goals. They are here to assist you in your planning. Feel free to use the formula over and over again for your actual desires."

One frustrating problem, Mr. Brown gives NO FORMULAS.

I followed up by going to Mr. Brown's company website and sending an e-mail explaining my frustration, I got a reply telling me to visit the website and click on "need a financial plan." This requires me to enter in my credit card information and be charged $25 for Mr. Brown to preform the calculations for me (the same calculations that should be outlined in Chapter 16). In addition, I get a free copy of a book that I just bought. WHAT?!

I bought this book expecting to be given the tools to be independent when setting up my goals. Or at least to understand how calculations are made before I seek out professional help. But Mr Brown only brought me halfway when he suggests ways to set up goals and then in turn doesn't fully explain them.

Wealthy and Wise

Have you ever heard the term,"It is not what you make, but what you keep?" Jesse Brown shows his readers that it does not matter if you earn $30,000 or $300,000, you must pay yourself first to achieve financial success. His basic formula for maximum growth is time + consistency + interest. Mr. Brown builds upon this simple formula to show African Americans how to achieve and maintain wealth.

PAY YOURSELF FIRST is a reader friendly financial planning guide. At the end of each chapter there are short quizzes for the reader to gauge their understanding of the material covered. I found this to be very helpful as the subject of finance can be confusing. The book also doubles as a workbook with a section for readers to put what they have learned into action. After reading this book, I felt empowered to take charge of my financial success and become an investor and not just a saver.

Good introduction to personal finance, but....

This book is a good introduction to personal finance. It makes one think about how they are handling their money and gives new perspectives on what should be done with money to be more prosperous. That's great, but I wish the book would give more detailed instruction on how to get started. If one is looking for help in getting started on a budget and finding ways to help manage their money to start saving and investing, they will need another book to illustrate that process more clearly.

Grillo does a great job of going in-depth on it however

Violence in Mexico as a result of the drug trade has boomed in the past ten years. Estimates are of 160,000 dead in the past ten years, with a million displaced. This includes years of averaging 20,000 dead. This violence is concentrated in the North, where cartels move drugs over the border in an operation that earns them an estimate $30 billion a year. That number makes it is the second largest international contributor to Mexico's economy, ahead of remittances and behind oil.

All of this information is difficult to track, as drug businesses aren't in the open. Grillo does a great job of going in-depth on it however. Every section of the drug industry is examined, from history to drug culture. Violence has grown as the government has fought to contain it, as narcos stepped up to the challenge of increased enforcement. Today there are even ex-military branches fighting against the Mexican government.

There is debate over whether or not these groups are insurgents or simply gangsters. It is clear however that the drug war has no signs of slowing. Increased enforcement will not work. Drug abuse in countries like Iran is still rampant, despite harsher penalties than the US would ever allow. Now is the time to move towards decriminalization or legalizing less harmful substances, as the prohibition has been a massive failure, especially South of the border.

Excellent Reporting on an Important and Disturbing Subject

In the last five years or so, the horrific violence across the Rio Grange has made headlines in the USA. There are articles about seemingly random gun battles in major cities, executions of drug "players," police, and even journalists covering the story. The book "El Narco" provides historical context and gripping reporting about this terrible situation.

The reader learns that the "Mexican drug trade" for the US started with the smuggling of opium across the border to fuel the needs of Chinese workers in the 19th century. In the 1960s, the rise in marijuana consumption led to importation of this drug. The sucessful Federal (US) efforts to shut down Florida as a route for Cocaine smuggling in the 1980s led to use of Mexico, with its large border, as the alternative pathway.

The book also explains how and why the violence has escalated so dramatically in the last few years, stemming in part from the end of one party political rule, and perhaps more importantly, the morphing of police/soldiers in Mexico from passive players (taking bribes) to active players, culminating in the rise of the Zetas, an almost unbelievably brutal drug organization.

Like any good reporter, the author provides telling details. A graphic example involves the take down of a major drug kingpin in an operation which resulted in fatalities amongst the soldiers/police who did the job. Gunmen from the kingpin's organization infiltrated the funeral of one of the soldiers, and murdered several family members. That is the way the game is played South of the Border.

My one (minor) criticism concerns the final chapter, in which the author provides suggested approaches which might help stem the violent tide. These ideas ( e.g., decriminalization/legalization of pot, more outreach in the poor areas to give youth alternatives to the drug "trade") are worthy of more explanation and analysis than provided in the book.

Overall, an excellent book on a very important topic, and well worth the time.

One of the more frightening books I've ever read!

I strongly advise not reading this book before a vacation trip to Mexico. We've been hearing horror stories about the increasing drug-related anarchy in Mexico, including the gun battles with the Zeta drug gang near Brownsville, Texas and the brutal killing in Ciudad Juarez, but this book gathers all of that quickly forgotten news into its genuinely ugly context and outlines exactly why Mexico has suffered such a tragic decline in its social stability and respect for law. There are sections of this book that made me wonder how the author was able to get out with his skin intact.

There is so much crime reporting in this book that sometimes I wonder if the writer isn't gilding the lily a little to make it seem worse than it actually is; unfortunately, I don't think he is. He thoroughly describes the gradual growth of the drug cartels from their obscure beginnings in the Mexican state of Sinaloa much earlier in the 20th century, through uneasy cartel relationships with the Mexican PRI dictatorship, to the explosion of violence beginning with the flowering of Mexican democracy less that 15 years ago, and continuing to the present day. It is clear that Mexico is in the grip of a criminal insurgency, fueled largely by American desire for the products from south of the border, and further boosted by American willingness to sell massive quantities of high-caliber firearms and assault weapons to anyone. I have not quite finished the book yet (I'm in the third of three parts) and all I can say is, if you want something that will keep you up at night, this is the book to read.
