Excellent Book, Rare Gem
By Carson
I am so grateful for this book, a true blessing. I'm buying my own copy after I write this review. I've suffered and continue to suffer from severe depression while on meds after suffering from a severe life crisis involving financial loss among other losses. My mind is in such a fog that I'm not really sure how to help myself, though I am very educated and have read quite a bit on depression. This book lays out basic information so persons can understand; be more informed; and thus know how to implement the recommended strategies to alleviate their depression, which for many people would also diminish their stress levels and anxiety. I think the beauty of this book lies in its simplicity. It does a great job of connecting the dots by explaining how and why depressed persons must implement the suggestions in this book thereby rightly indicating that meds alone is insufficient. Author is a physician who strikes me has having thoughtfully assembled and wrote this book from a heart of great compassion for patients; and that is very important to me because compassion helps doctors help patients. Simple and easy to read, this book's a gem. I've not seen any other self-help books like this one. This one's exceptionally good and I think will prove to be far more helpful to me than Dr. Aaron T. Beck's and Dr. David Burns's books. I say this not to insult them at all but only trying to communicate the value of this book in this review.

2.75 stars - It MAY be useful for someone else but ...
By SusieQ
I found this book unhelpful to my situation, but, this is not to say, it's not a useful book. It is short - it is written by a fellow sufferer - it is perhaps a good introduction to "depression management" although I did not personally find it very insightful or particularly useful. It may be that Dr. Noonan, being a sufferer herself, didn't have the objectivity to write about depression and management of it more compellingly. Actually I'm not quite sure why I couldn't get more from it.
However, there is one book which I can recommend. The advice I found in *The Mindful Way Through Depression,* by Mark Williams, et al., is easily put into practice, and that book has been much more useful to me than Dr. Noonan's. The insight I gained about managing depression from "The Mindful Way..." was more striking. Nothing, unfortunately, seems to effect a permanent cure, but so far, "The Mindful Way" has given me better results.

Insightful no-jargon self-help program for depression-sufferers
By sunfish
The author has personally suffered from depression, but also has a professional background in medicine and public health. This well-written small book leads a person with depression through self-help steps to recover from their depression (in conjunction with other therapies, which she discusses.) It also teaches a patient to recognize danger signs and situations and to respond proactively to them in order to stay healthy and avert relapses. Finally it helps the patient to develop a concrete plan of action to minimize the severity in the event of a relapse. Dr. Noonan does all this in a practical, positive and kindly way that provides a model for the patient in approaching his or her own depression, and explains her program simply and in small steps that do not overwhelm. This is an excellent book for patients and for anyone who lives with or loves a depression-sufferer.
